Dear Parents, congratulations on becoming a new mom or dad! Did you know that your little angel is born with a linguist brain? Yes, you heard that right, babies start learning in this world from the moment they are born!

Certainly! By exposing your baby to multiple languages, you’re giving them the wonderful gift of being able to communicate with people from all around the world. This not only helps them navigate the world with ease, but also impresses others with their impressive language skills. It’s like turning them into a language prodigy!

Bilingual infants have advanced cognitive abilities

According to a study conducted by the University of Washington, babies who grow up in bilingual households have better cognitive abilities compared to those who grow up in monolingual households. The study reveals that bilingual babies as young as 7 months are able to detect and differentiate between different languages which helps in developing their cognitive and analytical skills.

Another study published in the journal “Developmental Science” found that bilingual babies have more advanced cognitive abilities compared to monolingual babies. Bilingual infants were able to anticipate and predict an outcome better indicating elevated cognitive functioning.

Learning multiple languages enhances social skills

According to researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, bilingual babies demonstrate a greater ability to understand and interpret the meaning of social cues such as facial expressions and body language which can enhance their social cognition and empathy, making it easier for them to communicate and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

In conclusion, research studies support the idea that learning multiple languages offers many benefits for a child’s overall development, including cognitive and social development. Therefore, parents should promote a multilingual environment for their child which can help them to improve their analytical, cognitive, and social skills.

Are you ready to turn your baby into a linguistic genius? Let’s help them conquer the world, one word at a time! Look no further, because we’ve got some tips and tricks to get you started on the right track!  Welcome to !

Start Early

The key to helping your baby learn a second language is to start early. As early as 6 months, your baby can start to recognize language sounds and distinguish between them. Before you start helping your child learn a new language, it’s important to learn how to communicate with your baby. Use simple and understandable words, such as “mommy” or “daddy.” This will help your baby notice the changes in words and tones of voice. So don’t be afraid to start exposing your little one to another language right from the get-go.

Make it Fun

Learning a new language can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! Expose your child to different language environments, especially through media that can spark your baby’s interest in learning, such as music and picture books.

When your child listens to songs from different countries, he or she will start to develop an interest in different languages. For example, teach your child basic greetings such as “hello” or “thank you.” Singing and playing songs in different languages not only helps with memorization but also improves pronunciation and listening skills.

You can also use simple tools like pictures and cards to help your child learn the new language.Use games and stories to introduce new words and phrases. Watch children’s shows in the target language and practice having conversations with each other.

Repetition is key, so try to incorporate the new language into your baby’s daily routine as much as possible.

Science experiments

Another fun way is to involve your baby in science experiments! It may sound crazy, but studies have shown that exposing babies to different languages while doing multi-sensory activities (like playing with slime) results in better language acquisition.

Incorporating a new language into daily activities like planting can make it more practical and engaging for your baby. By having the exchange student speak in French while planting with my daughter, she became more interested in the activity and repeated the planting process steps in French. This is a great way to expose your baby to new vocabulary and improve their cognitive skills while having fun.

Additional tips for incorporating a new language into your daily routine with your baby:

1. Read bilingual books:

  • Reading bilingual books can be a fun and effective way to introduce your baby to a new language. Look for books that feature simple sentences and repetitive words or phrases, and practice reading them regularly with your baby.
  • Check out your local library or bookstore for bilingual children’s books. Websites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble also have a wide selection of bilingual books.

2. Watch shows in a new language:

  • Watching children’s shows in a new language can be a fun and engaging way to help your baby learn. There are many programs available online or on streaming services that feature children’s shows in different languages.
  • Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime have many children’s shows available in different languages. You can also find videos and clips on sites like YouTube.

3. Label objects in your home:

  • Labeling objects around your home with their names in a new language can be a helpful way to expose your baby to new vocabulary. For example, I label my refrigerator with the word “frigorífico” in Spanish and let my girl read and speak it loudly.
  • You can create your own labels using sticky notes or index cards. Alternatively, websites like Etsy and Amazon offer pre-made language labels for household objects.

4. Sing songs in a new language:

  • Singing songs in a new language can be a fun and interactive way to teach your baby new words and phrases. Look for simple children’s songs in the language you’re teaching and sing them together throughout the day.
  • Spotify, Duolingo and Babbel offer many playlists for children’s music in different languages. You can search for playlists specifically designed for language learning, or simply search for songs in the language you’re teaching.

5. Use Technology

  • Technology can be a valuable tool in helping your baby learn a new language. There are apps, online resources, language-learning videos and smart pens that are specifically tailored to young children. Just be sure to monitor their screen time and make sure they’re getting plenty of other types of stimulation as well.
  • Apps like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone offer language learning lessons for all ages, including young children. You can practice together with your baby and reinforce vocabulary throughout the day.
  • My boy uses a SMART PEN every day to listen to books in other languages, which are illustrated with pictures. As my boy listens to the dialogue between the characters, he also enjoys watching the story unfold.

6. Hire a language tutor:

  • For parents who don’t speak a new language themselves, hiring a language tutor can be a helpful way to introduce it to your baby. I hired a Mandarin tutor who can work with me and my girl to practice new words and phrases, and provide guidance on how to make it an ongoing part of your routine.
  • Websites like Preply and italki allow you to find language tutors from around the world who can work with you and your baby to practice new words and phrases.

7.Using Daily Life

Don’t forget to use the target language in your daily life. One way is to incorporate language into your everyday activities. For example, during mealtime, you can label different foods in various languages. “Mmmm, this spaghetti is delicious – or as they say in Italian, ‘delizioso!'”  Or talk about where you are going when riding public transportation. Through daily practice, your child can better master the new language.

By incorporating a new language into your daily routine with your baby, you can help expose them to new vocabulary and improve their cognitive skills. Remember to keep it fun and engaging, and to practice regularly to see the best results.

This age range is the best time to learn a new language, and we hope you cherish this learning opportunity for your child.
